Fairy Houses: The Magical Gift That Sparks Imagination at Any Age

By Sarah19 March 20264 min read

Every now and then a product surprises you. When we started making fairy houses at The Nutty Squirrel, we imagined them in children''s bedrooms — little magical objects to fuel big imaginations. And they work beautifully for that. But the customer who buys our fairy houses most enthusiastically? Adults. Often without children.

It turns out the desire for a small, handcrafted, quietly magical object doesn''t age out.

What Are Our Fairy Houses?

Each fairy house is individually handcrafted in our Wiltshire studio. We use natural-looking materials — wooden bases shaped like tree trunks and logs, roofs adorned with gemstones, tiny details like wooden ladybirds climbing the sides and miniature doors set into the bark.

No two are identical. Each one has its own character, its own slightly different arrangement of gemstones and details. They stand between four and seven inches tall and are designed to be displayed rather than played with roughly — though they''re sturdier than they look.

For Children: Fuelling the Best Kind of Imagination

Children who receive a fairy house from The Nutty Squirrel don''t just get an object. They get a story. Who lives there? What do they eat? Where do they go when no one is looking? These questions write themselves in a child''s mind, and they tend to elaborate and expand over years.

Parents often tell us their child has assigned names to their fairy house residents, built furniture from matchboxes and felt, and created elaborate narratives spanning months. That''s not something a screen can replicate.

Perfect age range: 3 and up, with different levels of engagement at different ages. Three-year-olds love to look and touch. Seven-year-olds build whole worlds around them. Twelve-year-olds will tell you they''re "too old" and then spend twenty minutes rearranging the gemstones.

For Adults: The Object That Changes a Space

Place a fairy house on a windowsill, a bookshelf, or a garden wall and something changes. The space becomes a little more whimsical. A little less serious. A little more alive.

We have customers who collect our fairy houses the way others collect ceramics or prints. Each new piece adds to a small world they''re building on a shelf or in a garden corner. There''s genuine pleasure in this kind of slow, deliberate collecting.

They also work brilliantly in garden settings — nestled between plants, at the base of a tree, or on a low garden wall. They''re weather-resistant enough for a sheltered outdoor spot during the warmer months, though we recommend bringing them in during harsh weather.

Fairy Houses as Gifts

Fairy houses are one of our most reliably well-received gifts. They work for:

  • Children''s birthdays (almost unfailingly brilliant)
  • Christmas (under a tree, they look extraordinary)
  • Housewarming gifts (they make any new space feel cared for and characterful)
  • Teacher gifts (we can''t tell you how many end-of-term fairy houses we''ve made)
  • Garden-loving adults
  • Anyone who has mentioned Narnia, The Hobbit, or fairies in the last twelve months

Our Current Collection

Our fairy house range includes tree trunk designs, log houses, sunflower-roofed cottages, and seasonal variations. We expand the range regularly — follow us on Facebook or Instagram to see new arrivals first.

We also take commissions for larger or more elaborate fairy houses. If you have something specific in mind, get in touch. We love a creative brief.
